Literally despite having twice as much dance talent than any kpop idol, dancers were only seen in their backup roles where they purposely hold back.īut clearly, as the interest shifted towards dance, the general interest shifted towards street woman fighter and the amazing dancers on there. So now in a dance focused industry the groups got all the credit, leaving the dancers in the shadows. Even groups that are known mostly for other attributes besides dancing have impressive choreos like Aespa, Gidle, Oh My Girl. But now dance skills in the 4th gen are on a another level with groups like Itzy, Iz*one, Loona, Everglow, and Dreamcatcher. Then Blackpink and Mamamoo brought a different energy doing dances that were more active and dynamic.
So first it was Gfriend and Twice who were doing easy moves but had really good execution so people started looking at them as actual skilled dancers and not just singers who dance on the side. Or a sexy concept that had very simple but typically easy moves. It was either a cutesy concept that was extremely in sync. Especially for the girl groups, it wasn’t until recently that they started doing powerful dance concepts. So eventually, Kpop shifted towards complex, difficult choreographies, often putting their live vocals to the side. These idols were marketed as the perfect person that was literally good at everything. They had the best rappers, best vocalists, best dancers, best visuals, best everything. There was a perception that Kpop idols had the best that Korea could offer. Idol groups were good at dancing but back then all the mattered was that the moves were simple enough that anyone could do them and that all the members were in sync. Then when the industry adopted rap, that became trendy as well. But in 2nd gen and early 3rd gen, vocals was all that mattered.
Over the last few years, we’ve seen KPOP shift from prioritizing raw vocal skill, and maybe not as much technique or talent.
